Posted June 12, 2019 07:31:06 A Queensland family has come together to say they are grateful for the support they have received from the public following the attack that left a toddler critically injured.

Kai, 9, was attacked by her grandfather’s dogs at their home in Wollongong, east of Darwin, at around 4.30pm on Sunday.

The boy was taken to a hospital in a critical condition, but his condition is still critical, his family said.

His mother, Rebecca, said her son was not in a “good mental state” and that he had not yet been put on a ventilator.

“It’s a difficult time, especially with the family he’s got, because he’s not really doing well,” Ms Rebecca said.

“We just want him to be ok, to have some closure.”

The attack occurred while Kai was at the house with her grandparents, and her grandfather, Paul, was also in the home with her.

Ms Rebecca said she had spoken to Kai’s grandmother, who had been “extremely upset” and said she wanted the boy’s mother to be held accountable.

Her grandparents have been contacted, and police are investigating.

Police have charged Paul and Kai with the attack, and are appealing for witnesses.

Anyone with information about the attack or who saw it should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. ABC/wires
